All of this data is used to show support for 3rd party development on the iPhone. Your email address will not be given, sold, or released to anyone. I'll probably put up pretty graphs later about what people said, and I will be pointing out to 3rd party developers what people asked for most in 3d party apps. This is all free, fun, and hopefully shows Apple there's support for 3rd party apps on the iPhone.
The Open iPhone / iPod Touch Open API Petition
To Apple, Inc and All Others It May Concern:
As Customers, Potential Customers, and Members of the Community at large, it has come to our attention that there is a serious flaw in the iPhone and iPod Touch that is limiting the end user's enjoyment of this unique computing device / cell phone.
Apple, Inc. has chosen not to produce a standard API for 3rd party native application development. While Apple, Inc has included a robust browser system that allows the user to run some (but not all) Web based applications, this is severely limited in scope and ability. Further, it relies on Internet connectivity which may at time be unavailable, and is always slower than native running applications.
Apple has also not only failed to produce a standard API for programmers to produce applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch, it has made many attempts to discourage developers and break the ability to install new 3rd party applications on a frequent basis now.
As Customers, Potential Customers, and Members of the Community, we request that Apple, Inc. re-evaluate it's current business model for the iPhone. At very minimum, Apple, Inc. should begin to take care to no longer break the ability to load 3rd party applications. But the real goal is for Apple, Inc. to produce and release a standard API for native application development for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and no longer count the current web based solution as the only means of expanding the iPhone's capabilities.
In the past, Apple, Inc. has done an outstanding job of supporting the development community for the Mac computer line, with excellent tools like X-Code and complete API references available. We ask that Apple, Inc do the same for their newest and most innovative computing platform yet!
